Chapter Thirteen

Everly

Where are you? Why is the electricity still off? Didn’t you pay the bill?

Everly had two days to move her stuff out of the little house she’s lived in with her mom since she was in the fourth grade. Before that they lived in a run-down apartment complex on the south side of Savannah. She took everything she needed to Lydia’s house, and the things she didn’t need are in a tiny storage unit that she paid for herself. Lydia had offered the garage, but Everly didn’t feel comfortable invading Jess’s space and she wanted to start doing things to take care of herself.

It felt good to go in and pay the rent for six months and lock all her belongings away in a place only she has the key to. She even turned down Gage’s offer to help her. She had to make a couple of trips, but she did it on her own.

Catching Trey red-handed wasn’t as bad as she imagined it would be. The hard part is thinking about how she looked to everyone else around her. That and the fact that the guys in the club who knew she was with Trey also knew he was cheating. Gage knew.

It was humiliating. Mainly because she’d let it go on for so long. She’d turned a blind eye to all the times before, and the reasons why only serve to prove, at least to her, that she’s following in her mother’s footsteps.

That’s changing. Everything is changing.

Gage was right about one thing: she needs to figure out what she really wants and let herself have it. He wasn’t just talking about kissing him either.
